History of the Quinta
Quinta do outeiro is a beautifully restored 17th-century manor house located in the heart of the Douro Valley.
This five-hectare estate, surrounded by beautiful vineyards, offers superior accommodation with a staff versed in a highly personal and distinctive service.
Quinta do Outeiro is an important historical building of the region, and its origins date back to the seventeenth century, where it was owned by the Portuguese nobility, including descendants of William I of England, the Conqueror.
Since its acquisition by José Pinto Cardeano in 1906, Quinta do Outeiro has remained in the family for a century.
José Cardeano made his fortune in Brazil and when he returned, decided to acquire the Quinta, where he did substantioal developement work, including the chapel and the manor house, and also created the formal gardens, as they can be seen today.
In recent decades, the Quinta do Outeiro went through a period of deterioration until it was acquired in 2006 by two British businessmen, with the vision and passion of renovating and restoring it to its former glory.
In an interesting turn of fate, the successful entrepreneurial activities of a Portuguese national in Brazil provided the fortunes for the turnaround of the Quinta at the beginning of the 20th Century. A century later, the entrepreneurial spirit of two Englishmen – who found success in the booming Information Technology industry – saw, once again, the return of the Quinta to an estate of land and buildings that the region can be proud of.
